The 420 is Caterpillar’s flagship backhoe, it’s the most popular due to the versatility of thes size and how well balanced it is. And because of that it’s really the machine that Cat bases the rest of its lineup upon. And an all-new model just hit the market. But along with this updated 420, Cat has introduced a new premium version of this machine that is all about adding just a bit more in a few key areas.

The new Cat 420 and 420 XE are the anchors of Cat’s new lineup of backhoes so let’s discuss what’s new with these two backhoe models but also discuss what sets the 420 XE apart. We’ve got the full breakdown on all the updates and improvements to these new machines and the differences between them in the video below.



New Naming

Let’s start with the new name of these machines. In 2017 Cat started removing letter suffixes from its machine model names. So while the previous generation of backhoes was denoted by the F2 suffix, that has been dropped from the new model names.

That means that the new 420 and 420 XE backhoes replace the 420F2 and 420F2 IT model.

Beyond a new name, the primary updates on the new 420 backhoes are a new engine, a new hood design, improved performance and better fuel efficiency.

One of the first changes you’ll notice is that new hood design. Cat has reshaped it with a sharper slope from the cab to the loader to provide you with more visibility to the bucket or whatever tool you’re currently using.

 

New C3.6 engine

Cat has replaced the C4.4 engine that powered the F2 Series of backhoes with the new C3.6 engine. The engine provides 92 horsepower on both the 420 and 420 XE and meets Tier 4 Final emission standards through a service-free Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emission solution with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and diesel particulate filter (DPF).

Cat says this new engine provides quicker acceleration while roading and lowers operating costs through an improvement to fuel efficiency of 10 percent.

“Not only is [this engine] going into our backhoe loaders…but it’s also going into a few other BCP products, such as our compact wheel loaders and our small truck type tractors,” says Cat backhoe product specialist Dustin Adams. “Just the commonality across those products gives us a distinct advantage. From a maintenance standpoint, your guys in the service shop working on the same engine [on] different pieces of equipment, with similar technology and similar components.”

“Because this machine is also a global product it’s also meeting our European Stage Five emissions. So we are beyond where we need to be in North America with our emissions compliance package, and so when things change, and we go to that Tier Five or that Stage Five in North America, Cat will already be there with backhoe loaders.”

The engine is paired to a four-speed powershift transmission that provides effortless shifting through a simple twist of the power shuttle lever. Cat has also implemented a spring applied hydraulically released (SAHR) parking brake. This electronic parking brake that engages with the single press of a button or whenever the machine is shut off.

 

New Boom Cylinder, Power Modes, Adjustable Aux Hydraulic Flow

Four wheel drive with a locking rear differential is standard on both 420 backhoes as are selectable power management modes. The Standard Mode tailors engine performance for increased fuel savings while the Standard Plus mode provides a performance boost by pushing backhoe implement speeds to their maximum capability.

A major improvement on the latest 420 models is a new boom cylinder. Cat says the new cylinder is larger and increases boom lift capability by 15 percent and this update really represents a nice increase in capability for this size class.

“With cylinders, bigger is always better. And so the bigger the boom cylinder, the more powerful it’s going to be and the more weight it’s going to be able to pick up. So with the 420, we wanted to increase this performance and get it closer to our 15-foot size class machine so that our customers have models to choose from, and have the same power whether it was in the 14 foot size class or the 15 foot size class,” Adams explains.

“So we decided to add larger boom cylinders on the 420, giving it the same lift performance as our 430 which is in the 15 foot size class. It just gives them another option in a slightly smaller package.”

These models also feature adjustable auxiliary hydraulic flow on the loader and that allows you to fine-tune the hydraulics to power attachments like brooms or angling snow pushes.

To further increase these machines’ versatility, you can opt for the Integrated Tool Carrierâ€"or ITâ€" loader coupler. This thing is really all about faster attachment changes and it’s available as a factory installed option or in a field installed kit.

Another note on attachments, the 420 and 420 XE retain compatibility with all Cat F2 series attachments, so you won’t have to worry about buying all new tools.

 

What’s So Special About the XE?

Now that we’ve discussed the features and specs shared by the 420 and 420 XE, let’s talk about what differentiates the XE model.

Really the difference between the 420 and the 420 XE boils down to comfort and convenience options.

“From a performance standpoint, pound for pound, they’re almost identical. But the XE comes to you as a premium package,” Adams says. “So with the 420 XE, you’re getting the seat-mounted controls over pilot controls…It’s also giving you electronic loader controls.”

All of Cat’s new backhoes come with pilot controls standard, just as they did on the F2 Series. So the first advantage is that the 420 XE upgrades those to seat-mounted controls. And as the name suggests they swivel with you between the loader and backhoe positions.

Now, obviously, because the controls are part of the seat, they’re not mounted in to the floor and that has freed up some legroom in the cab. There’s nothing in your way anymore as you swivel between loader and backhoe and it makes adjusting your seat much easier.

Plus, they also free you up to position the seat such that you are offset from the backhoe, and that can give you better visibility such as when you’re sideloading trucks.

But the other feature these seat-mounted controls make possible is Dual Mode. Dual Mode basically gives you control of whatever side of the machine you’re facing away from without having to swivel between positions.

Let’s say you’re digging a trench with the backhoe as shown in the example from Cat in our video above and you need to move the machine up to continue the trench. Cat has placed a Dual Mode trigger on the left joystick. While you’re squeezing that trigger, you’re given Dual Mode control of the side of the machine behind you. So in this case, you’d squeeze the trigger and raise the loader arms. With the loader raised, you can now let go of the Dual Mode trigger and reposition the machine using the backhoe.

Another feature exclusive to the 420 XE is electronic loader controls. The cool thing about these controls is that they allow the single-tilt loader arms on the 420 XE to have full rack angle control and perform parallel liftingâ€"something that up until now was only possible on Cat’s eight-bar linkage IT loader arm configuration.

Parallel lifting is great because it doesn’t allow for tipping while you’re raising the bucket. With the bucket level, you increase material retention.

Now you get that great material retention without the need for the eight-bar linkage. As Adams explained to us, there’s good reason for adapting single-tilt arms for parallel lift.

“The single tilt loader arms, they give you a better mechanical advantage, better breakout force and better lift capability and with fewer moving pieces,” Adams says.

The new electronic control system is complemented by a set of sensors on the bucket that tell the system how the bucket is angled and how to correct for those angles to keep the bucket level.

The other benefits of these electronic controls is programmable loader kickout and return to dig. Those can both be set via the new in-cab display. On the 420, that display is soft-key controlled, but on the XE Cat makes it a touchscreen.

Through that touchscreen you can also dial in operator modes.

“It [allows] the operator to tune those controls to their desire,” Adams says. “So if you’ve got a novice operator who needs a little bit slower controls and less sensitivity and joysticks, they can tune that machine through the operator control display to their liking. Whereas if you’ve got an operator who’s been in the seat a little bit longer and likes real snappy controls, quick responses, you can go into the operator display and change the joystick response from slow to medium, to fast, and the hydraulic modulation from fine to normal, to course. So they have a tremendous amount of flexibility in that.”

Another nice 420 XE feature is the inclusion of Cat’s deluxe high-back, air suspension seat as a standard feature.

 

Maintenance

Adams told us that Cat has also made sure that maintenance and daily checks are still easy to access on both the 420 and 420 XE.

“So with this new this updated machine, we’re getting the new 3.6 liter Cat engine but we did not stray away from our flip up, flip out coolant packages,” Adams says. “You still have the ability to clean out those coolant packages with no tools being required in just a couple of minutes. You also have the ability on a daily basis when you’re doing your daily walk around to do all that maintenance from one location on the machine on a large safe platform waith our grouped locations of daily checkpoints.”

The 420 and 420 XE also feature heavy-duty, maintenance free batteries and a standard quick disconnect switch.

Available options on these loaders are flip-over stabilizer pads and and the extendable e-Stick which adds an additional 3 feet of reach.

New Loftness Battle Ax mulcher designed specifically for ASV loaders

Loftness has introduced a new Battle Ax mulching head attachment specifically designed for ASV compact track loaders.

The ASV-focused S-Series Battle Ax, available through ASV dealers, produces a finer mulch with fewer passes due to Loftness’ shear bars and two-stage cutting chamber. It is geared to such tasks as land clearing, right-of-way maintenance and forestry mulching. ASV says contractors can use it to fell large trees, shave off materials and perform forward and reverse mulching.

Volvo gives new P5110B, P5170B pavers fuel-efficient engines

Volvo Construction Equipment designed its new P5110B tracked and P5170B wheeled pavers for heavy commercial and light highway work.

The 20-ton pavers are powered by Volvo’s D6 173-horsepower Tier 4 Final engine, which is also used in the manufacturer’s L60H to L90H wheel loaders. Volvo says it designed the engine for fuel efficiency, with the tracked model able to achieve an average of 3.7 gallons per hour and the wheeled paver getting 3.3 gallons per hour. The engine is also designed to reduce vibrations and produce a low noise level of 79 decibels.

John Deere intros skid steer trencher attachment

John Deere’s new TC36 and TC48 attachments can turn skid steers and compact track loaders into trenchers.

The attachments are designed for light-duty construction and agricultural applications. Deere says it offers a variety of configurations to match most soil conditions or trench requirements.

XCMG deploys new autonomous rollers to build China highway

Chinese equipment manufacturer XCMG says it has successfully tested its new autonomous asphalt compactor during construction of a new highway in China.

The technology for the autonomous machine was developed in a partnership of XCMG, Sichuan Railway Investment Group and Tsinghua University.

XCMG says its new autonomous road roller succeeded in tests at the end of May while working to build the Panzhihua-Dali Highway, also known as the Panda Expressway, between the cities of Panzhihua and Dali. Xinhua also reports that the project involves unmanned pavers.

Ever seen what looks like a tiny wheel loader with a green coat of paint running around a local jobsite or a booth at ConExpo and wondered “What the heck is that thing?”

It’s likely one made by Avant Tecno, an equipment manufacturer based out of Finland. While the company refers to their machines simply as “wheel loaders,” these machines really represent a mashup of the compact wheel loader and skid steer with an articulation joint thrown in.

In the video below we give you a full breakdown of the Avant loader lineup and spotlight a couple specific models. Check it out. Or, if you prefer text, you can read on after the break.



Let’s look at the Avant 635. Calling this machine compact doesn’t really do it justice. It’s tiny, weighing in at just 3,400 pounds.

Compare that to a typical compact wheel loader, the smallest of which usually weigh in somewhere between 9,000 and 10,000 pounds. Now, Avant has larger machines, but none of them are heavier than 5,600 pounds.

So just in terms of size alone you’re dealing with a very different machine than what are typically called “compact wheel loaders” and those are just the surface differences. We’re going to get into more specifics on a couple of Avant’s loadersâ€"including the newest and largest of the bunch in the 860iâ€"but first let’s talk about the Avant lineup and what makes these little loaders so special.

 

Articulation and stability

We’ll start with articulation. As their size suggests, Avant’s loader lineup is primarily aimed at smaller tasks, tight jobsites, indoor jobsites, you get the picture. And while these loaders are small to begin with and thus very maneuverable, that articulated joint makes them even more maneuverable.

An important distinction though is that while these loaders articulate, they don’t oscillate, or roll, at that articulation joint. When the machine is articulating on a slope, both the front and rear portions remain at the same angle. That’s because another important design factor for Avant is stability. And boy are these things stable. While at ConExpo an Avant employee parked a loader across a slope, got out and hung from the side of the rear cab postâ€"and then began yanking and pulling. The loader didn’t budge. (You can see that demo in the video above.)

Beyond the absence of oscillation, the other reason these machines are so stable while working on slopes is that they have a really low center of gravity and, as Avant’s Matt Jarck told me at ConExpo earlier this year, 70 percent of the weight on these machines is located in that rear portion.

With the drive motors, the engine and the transmission located below and behind the operator, the machine stays really well balanced even when carrying a load while traversing a slope.

 

So many attachments

The other half of that “multi-tool articulated loader” description Avant uses for its machines is the “multi-tool” part. The company currently offers 200 attachments for these machines and they include a lot of what you’d expect. Various types of buckets, forks and brooms.

But there are more specific attachments too like trenchers, backhoes, concrete mixers, snowplows, snow blowers, several different types of mowers as well as lawn aerators, rippers and breakers.

And then there are some very specific tools like a beehive mover or an ice rink scraper blade, or a bale splitter.

They even make a rotator fitting that lets you rotate your attachments for even more versatility and they offer power tools that interface with this system.

Another aspect of these machines that Avant capitalizes on through attachments is their pushing and pulling power. The company offers a hydraulic rear hitch for towing and offers both a ball hitch and a three point hitch adapter for placement on the front of the machine. With that front hitch you can push or pull trailers and with that three point adapter you can pull farm tools and even lift them.

A couple more notes on these attachments. Though Avant offers 200 of them, not all are compatible with every loader the company sells. Plus they’re all hydraulically powered. Avant’s auxiliary hydraulic flow for the lineup ranges from 7.9 to 21 gallons per minute.

 

A worthy skid steer competitor

So when you combine the Avant lineup’s size, weight, maneuverability and the enormous amount of tools at your disposal this becomes a very intriguing alternative to a compact wheel loader, a compact track loader or a skid steer. The comparison is especially apt when considering that a good chunk of the Avant lineup offers between 1,000 and 3,000 pounds of rated operating capacity. However Avant offers all the way up to 4,190 pounds capacity.

Another machine type that at least a portion of the Avant lineup stacks up well with is the mini skid steer. Those machines too are quickly gaining popularity among small contractors, farmers and landscapers.

But if we’re just comparing them to traditional skid steers, beyond the lower weight, another advantage to these loaders over a skid steer is their articulation which Avant says virtually guarantees that it won’t tear up grass.

Obviously that makes these machines very attractive to landscapers, municipalities, parks and rec departments, and cemeteries. But Avant also aims these machines and produces attachments for farming, snow removal, tree removal, construction and demolition as well.

In fact, when you look at all the things Avant is bringing to the table here, it’s pretty easy to understand why Bobcat recently introduced its own pair of machines into this category called the Bobcat SAL or Small Articulated Loader.

Avant is a Finnish company and entered the U.S. market less than 10 years ago in 2012. Jarck tells me the company’s U.S. operation has been growing at rate of 20-25 percent each year, but even still, they hold a small foothold in the U.S. market. So, they were a bit flattered at Bobcat’s entry to their market and feel it’s evidence that they’re making a strong impression here.

In terms of price, Jarck tells us that loaders in the Avant lineup sell in range of $20,000 to $70,000.

 

Avant 635

So now that we’ve got a handle on what the Avant loader is and what it’s capable of, let’s talk about a couple of specific models.

We’ll start with the Avant 635. This is a 26-horsepower hydrostatic drive machine powered by a Kubota diesel engine with 2,500 pounds of lift capacity.

Lift height tops out at just over 9 feet and the machine is capable of a top speed of 9 mph.

The 635’s max breakout force is 2700 pounds and like the other two loaders in the Avant’s 600 series, it has a standard telescoping boom. It has 17.4 gpm of auxiliary hydraulic flow.

 

Avant 860i

Now if you need more of everything, there’s the 860i.

This is Avant’s latest diesel-powered model and it’s also the largest machine the company offers.

Powered by a 57-hp Kohler diesel engine, the 860i weighs in at 5,600 pounds and it has a lift capacity of 4,190 pounds.

The 860i also has a standard telescoping boom and max lift height with this machine is about 11 and a half feet and top speed is 18.6 mph.

In addition to the hundreds of attachments Avant offers, they also offer a ton of options and accessories on their loaders. On both the 635 and the 860i that we’ve talked about here, you can opt for an enclosed climated controlled cab, boom float and self leveling, additional auxiliary hydraulic outlets on the rear and on the front, counterweights, tie-down brackets, lighting kits and more.

Bobcat Unveils 4 New R-Series Skid Steers and CTLs: S64, S66, T64 and T66 are Stronger, More Durable (VIDEO) oleh - wheelloadercaterpillar.xyz

Bobcat‘s next generation lineup of skid steers and compact track loaders is expanding with four new 60 frame size, vertical lift models: the S64 and S66 skid steers and the T64 and T66 compact track loaders.

The new loaders join the Bobcat R-Series S76 skid steer and T76 CTL unveiled in September 2019 and launched to the market in February 2020.

All four new R-Series loader models are powered by Bobcat’s new 2.4-liter, turbocharged engine with a new inline design. On the new S66 skid steer and T66 CTL you’ll get the same 74-horsepower rating as you’ll find on the larger S76 and T76. In terms of operating capacity, the S66 delivers 2,400 pounds while the T66 has 2,450 pounds of capacity. Lift height maxes out at 120 inches.

The S64 skid steer and T64 CTL have a 68 hp rating and both loaders will give you 2,300 pounds of rated operating capacity and 120 inches of lift height.

Improved durability and strength

You’ll notice that Bobcat has gone with an updated look on these machines and the company says it wasn’t just done for an aesthetic refresh. Overall, Bobcat claims these new loaders are tougher and more durable than the machines that came before them.

Specifically, the new loader arms on the new R-Series machines are built with cast steel. Bobcat says that during manufacturing, the corners of the new arms can now be formed without the need for additional fabricated plates that introduce weak points to the design and can also block an operator’s visibility to the ground.

Bobcat says the new cast-steel design is 20-percent stronger than the former fabricated steel design. The other benefit is that it has allowed Bobcat to slim up the loader arms while also making them more resilient, putting more steel where it was needed for better durability and reinforcement.

Bobcat notes that its Bob-Tach attachment mounting system is also built from a cast steel process for a stronger connection point. The system has fewer welds overall than past mounting systems along with openings that allow dirt and debris to pass through to make clean outs easier.

The new design of these lift arms also changes the placement of the linkage. It’s no longer located below the arms themselves and is instead now on the back of the machine for a further increase in visibility.

Bobcat has also updated the tilt cylinder design, removing the hoses, tubes and skid plates for more visibility to your bucket and other work tools.

But the most practical improvement these new loaders benefit from the loader arm overhaul is more lift capacity throughout the loaders’ range of motion, including at full reach. Bobcat also says that all of the new loaders have seen increase in lift height for easier dumping into high-sided dump trucks and hoppers.

Alongside these loaders, Bobcat is launching a new heavy duty bucket with roll back. The buckets feature a waffle skid underneath for increased rigidity, and bolt-on cutting edges are standard for better soil shaping.

5-link Torsion Suspension on CTLs

Another big change on the design of the compact track loader models is to a more stable five-link torsion suspension that has now completely replaced the roller suspension found on past models. The big differences for operators is that the torsion suspension reduces stress and vibration, making operation more comfortable. Bobcat says it has also managed to get two more of these tracks on the ground.

 

Larger cooling package

Earlier we mentioned that new inline engine design, and while that new engine features a vertical fuel tank and improved fuel efficiency, the big change to these new loaders in terms of performance is going to be the new cooling system Bobcat has implemented on the R Series.

Bobcat says operators are calling on skid steers and compact track loaders for increasingly larger and more difficult jobs, so the redesigned cooling system is 50 percent larger than what was found on the M2 Series.

In addition to moving the cooling package further away from the cab to decrease cab noise, the new package also has a different cooling pattern. Instead of drawing air from the top and blowing it out the sides of the engine compartment, the new package does a better job of surrounding the engine with cool air, drawing air from the rear of the machine and blowing it out the top of the package.

An available option on the new cooling package is a reversing fan.

New one-piece cab design

We just mentioned the reduced noise levels in the cab thanks to the new location of the cooling package, but that’s far from the only improvement operators will find once they hop inside one of these new R Series machines.

Another big reason why the new cabs on these machines are quieter is the new one-piece, sealed and pressurized design Bobcat has used. Bobcat says the new design does a better job of isolating the operator from engine and hydraulic noise while also improving the efficiency of the machines’ heating and air conditioning.

And because it’s a one-piece design whenever it’s time for servicing or making repairs to the machine, the entire cab on R-Series machines rotates out of the way for better service access.

The cab is also larger than those found on previous machines and you’ll also find keyless start as a standard feature, a heated air-ride seat, a Bluetooth audio system, a 5-inch standard display or the new optional 7-inch Bobcat Touch display. The touch display gives operators access to detailed machine information and can be navigated with touch or jog dial. The touchscreen is waterproof, can be used with gloves and and has is scratch resistant.

Another option for increased visibility to the tracks or wheels of the new R Series loaders is a new clear-side cab which removes the steel mesh screens front he side windows. When you order this clear-side cab because you’re letting so much more sunlight into the machine, Bobcat includes automatic climate control.

And though this cab option has more glass, Bobcat says it’s still highly protective of the operator with 4,000 psi polycarbonate reinforcement to guard against outside impacts.

In terms of controls, the loaders have Bobcat’s latest Selectable Joystick Controls and these feature drive response mode, speed management, steering drift compensation and horsepower management. This also means they’re compatible with Bobcat’s new MaxControl remote control for iPhones and iPads.

And while steering is still manual, Bobcat has added electric pedals which allowed for the inclusion of dual direction bucket positioning. This feature automatically keeps a load at a consistent angle when raising and lower throughout the lift cycle. And since you’re able to keep a level bucket, the feature reduces spilling and makes experienced operators more efficient while making operation a bit easier for new operators.

Atop the cab is a new LED lighting system. The design of these new lights allow the light to wrap around the corners of the machine for better visibility at night. With the optional side lights, Bobcat says the R-Series machines can provide 180 degrees of visibility at night.

Finally, in addition to that new rotating one-piece cab design, Bobcat has made a few more changes for easier maintenance including a protected battery with remote jumpstart, a new and larger fuel filter for better system protection and longer filter life, and adjustment free engine belts.

Doosan dealer Best Line Equipment has opened a new facility in New Jersey situated for servicing customers from there and those traveling from nearby New York City.

The new Best Line location is at 275 Clark Street in Keyport, New Jersey and is just 8 miles from New York City borough Staten Island. It’s Pennsylvania-based Best Line’s first New Jersey location. The company has locations throughout its home state including locations in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.

Best Line provides equipment sales, rental and service for Doosan and a wide variety of other brands and equipment types. The Keyport location will serve customers in New Jersey and those from throughout New York City with heavy equipment, compact equipment, aerial lifts, compaction equipment, air compressors and more.

The location will offer the full Doosan heavy equipment lineup including excavators, wheel loaders and articulated dump trucks.

“Doosan gives Best Line Equipment all the tools we need to serve our customers,” says Armand Cencetti, Doosan sales manager at Best Line Equipment. “It’s been a mutually beneficial relationship between Doosan and Best Line Equipment. We’re already being accepted very well in New Jersey and are looking for additional employees to hire in rental, sales and service.”

The opening of the Keyport location is the latest milestone in a 10-year business relationship between Doosan and Best Line. In 2019 Best Line was named a top Doosan equipment dealer.

The 420 is Caterpillar’s flagship backhoe, it’s the most popular due to the versatility of thes size and how well balanced it is. And because of that it’s really the machine that Cat bases the rest of its lineup upon. And an all-new model just hit the market. But along with this updated 420, Cat has introduced a new premium version of this machine that is all about adding just a bit more in a few key areas.

The new Cat 420 and 420 XE are the anchors of Cat’s new lineup of backhoes so let’s discuss what’s new with these two backhoe models but also discuss what sets the 420 XE apart. We’ve got the full breakdown on all the updates and improvements to these new machines and the differences between them in the video below.



New Naming

Let’s start with the new name of these machines. In 2017 Cat started removing letter suffixes from its machine model names. So while the previous generation of backhoes was denoted by the F2 suffix, that has been dropped from the new model names.

That means that the new 420 and 420 XE backhoes replace the 420F2 and 420F2 IT model.

Beyond a new name, the primary updates on the new 420 backhoes are a new engine, a new hood design, improved performance and better fuel efficiency.

One of the first changes you’ll notice is that new hood design. Cat has reshaped it with a sharper slope from the cab to the loader to provide you with more visibility to the bucket or whatever tool you’re currently using.

 

New C3.6 engine

Cat has replaced the C4.4 engine that powered the F2 Series of backhoes with the new C3.6 engine. The engine provides 92 horsepower on both the 420 and 420 XE and meets Tier 4 Final emission standards through a service-free Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emission solution with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and diesel particulate filter (DPF).

Cat says this new engine provides quicker acceleration while roading and lowers operating costs through an improvement to fuel efficiency of 10 percent.

“Not only is [this engine] going into our backhoe loaders…but it’s also going into a few other BCP products, such as our compact wheel loaders and our small truck type tractors,” says Cat backhoe product specialist Dustin Adams. “Just the commonality across those products gives us a distinct advantage. From a maintenance standpoint, your guys in the service shop working on the same engine [on] different pieces of equipment, with similar technology and similar components.”

“Because this machine is also a global product it’s also meeting our European Stage Five emissions. So we are beyond where we need to be in North America with our emissions compliance package, and so when things change, and we go to that Tier Five or that Stage Five in North America, Cat will already be there with backhoe loaders.”

The engine is paired to a four-speed powershift transmission that provides effortless shifting through a simple twist of the power shuttle lever. Cat has also implemented a spring applied hydraulically released (SAHR) parking brake. This electronic parking brake that engages with the single press of a button or whenever the machine is shut off.

 

New Boom Cylinder, Power Modes, Adjustable Aux Hydraulic Flow

Four wheel drive with a locking rear differential is standard on both 420 backhoes as are selectable power management modes. The Standard Mode tailors engine performance for increased fuel savings while the Standard Plus mode provides a performance boost by pushing backhoe implement speeds to their maximum capability.

A major improvement on the latest 420 models is a new boom cylinder. Cat says the new cylinder is larger and increases boom lift capability by 15 percent and this update really represents a nice increase in capability for this size class.

“With cylinders, bigger is always better. And so the bigger the boom cylinder, the more powerful it’s going to be and the more weight it’s going to be able to pick up. So with the 420, we wanted to increase this performance and get it closer to our 15-foot size class machine so that our customers have models to choose from, and have the same power whether it was in the 14 foot size class or the 15 foot size class,” Adams explains.

“So we decided to add larger boom cylinders on the 420, giving it the same lift performance as our 430 which is in the 15 foot size class. It just gives them another option in a slightly smaller package.”

These models also feature adjustable auxiliary hydraulic flow on the loader and that allows you to fine-tune the hydraulics to power attachments like brooms or angling snow pushes.

To further increase these machines’ versatility, you can opt for the Integrated Tool Carrierâ€"or ITâ€" loader coupler. This thing is really all about faster attachment changes and it’s available as a factory installed option or in a field installed kit.

Another note on attachments, the 420 and 420 XE retain compatibility with all Cat F2 series attachments, so you won’t have to worry about buying all new tools.

 

What’s So Special About the XE?

Now that we’ve discussed the features and specs shared by the 420 and 420 XE, let’s talk about what differentiates the XE model.

Really the difference between the 420 and the 420 XE boils down to comfort and convenience options.

“From a performance standpoint, pound for pound, they’re almost identical. But the XE comes to you as a premium package,” Adams says. “So with the 420 XE, you’re getting the seat-mounted controls over pilot controls…It’s also giving you electronic loader controls.”

All of Cat’s new backhoes come with pilot controls standard, just as they did on the F2 Series. So the first advantage is that the 420 XE upgrades those to seat-mounted controls. And as the name suggests they swivel with you between the loader and backhoe positions.

Now, obviously, because the controls are part of the seat, they’re not mounted in to the floor and that has freed up some legroom in the cab. There’s nothing in your way anymore as you swivel between loader and backhoe and it makes adjusting your seat much easier.

Plus, they also free you up to position the seat such that you are offset from the backhoe, and that can give you better visibility such as when you’re sideloading trucks.

But the other feature these seat-mounted controls make possible is Dual Mode. Dual Mode basically gives you control of whatever side of the machine you’re facing away from without having to swivel between positions.

Let’s say you’re digging a trench with the backhoe as shown in the example from Cat in our video above and you need to move the machine up to continue the trench. Cat has placed a Dual Mode trigger on the left joystick. While you’re squeezing that trigger, you’re given Dual Mode control of the side of the machine behind you. So in this case, you’d squeeze the trigger and raise the loader arms. With the loader raised, you can now let go of the Dual Mode trigger and reposition the machine using the backhoe.

Another feature exclusive to the 420 XE is electronic loader controls. The cool thing about these controls is that they allow the single-tilt loader arms on the 420 XE to have full rack angle control and perform parallel liftingâ€"something that up until now was only possible on Cat’s eight-bar linkage IT loader arm configuration.

Parallel lifting is great because it doesn’t allow for tipping while you’re raising the bucket. With the bucket level, you increase material retention.

Now you get that great material retention without the need for the eight-bar linkage. As Adams explained to us, there’s good reason for adapting single-tilt arms for parallel lift.

“The single tilt loader arms, they give you a better mechanical advantage, better breakout force and better lift capability and with fewer moving pieces,” Adams says.

The new electronic control system is complemented by a set of sensors on the bucket that tell the system how the bucket is angled and how to correct for those angles to keep the bucket level.

The other benefits of these electronic controls is programmable loader kickout and return to dig. Those can both be set via the new in-cab display. On the 420, that display is soft-key controlled, but on the XE Cat makes it a touchscreen.

Through that touchscreen you can also dial in operator modes.

“It [allows] the operator to tune those controls to their desire,” Adams says. “So if you’ve got a novice operator who needs a little bit slower controls and less sensitivity and joysticks, they can tune that machine through the operator control display to their liking. Whereas if you’ve got an operator who’s been in the seat a little bit longer and likes real snappy controls, quick responses, you can go into the operator display and change the joystick response from slow to medium, to fast, and the hydraulic modulation from fine to normal, to course. So they have a tremendous amount of flexibility in that.”

Another nice 420 XE feature is the inclusion of Cat’s deluxe high-back, air suspension seat as a standard feature.

 

Maintenance

Adams told us that Cat has also made sure that maintenance and daily checks are still easy to access on both the 420 and 420 XE.

“So with this new this updated machine, we’re getting the new 3.6 liter Cat engine but we did not stray away from our flip up, flip out coolant packages,” Adams says. “You still have the ability to clean out those coolant packages with no tools being required in just a couple of minutes. You also have the ability on a daily basis when you’re doing your daily walk around to do all that maintenance from one location on the machine on a large safe platform waith our grouped locations of daily checkpoints.”

The 420 and 420 XE also feature heavy-duty, maintenance free batteries and a standard quick disconnect switch.

Available options on these loaders are flip-over stabilizer pads and and the extendable e-Stick which adds an additional 3 feet of reach.
